After Wednesday's Bell Market Commentary

On Wednesday, in his second economic report before Congress, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said that the slowdown in the economy should dampen inflationary pressures. The upbeat comments from Bernanke sparked a rally lifting the markets to a higher close. The Commerce Department reported that construction of new homes continued to slow as the pace fell 5.3% in June for a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.85 million units. A barrel of light crude settled at $72.66, down 88 cents. Investors mulled over the latest inflation news while strong earnings among blue chips lifted the Dow Jones Industrial average to gain more than 210 points. The Dow rose 212.19, or 1.96 percent, to close at 11,011.42. The Nasdaq composite index rose 37.49, or 1.83 percent, to close at 2,080.71. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 22.95, up 1.86 percent, to close at 1,259.81. The Russell 2000 index rose 20.70, or 3.04 percent, to close at 702.34.
