After Wednesday's Bell Market Commentary

On Wednesday, strong May retail sales boosted the markets to a higher close. The Commerce Department reported that retail sales jumped 1.4 percent in May which was the highest in 16 months and double the increase analysts expected. The Federal Reserve in its occasional Beige Book report on the economy said that most regions reported steady, modest growth, with few heightened worries about inflation. The Labor Department said U.S. import prices rose a higher-than-expected 0.09 percent in May. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield's surged to five-year highs before slipping to 5.21 percent from 5.295 percent. The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, and gold prices slipped. Light, sweet crude climbed 91 cents to $66.26 per barrel. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 187 points as bond yields eased. The Dow jumped 187.34, or 1.41 percent, to close at 13,482.35. The Nasdaq composite index rose 32.54, or 1.28 percent, to close at 2,582.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 22.67, or 1.52 percent, to close at 1,515.67. The Russell 2000 index rose 10.82, or 1.32 percent, to close at 832.54.
