After Monday's Bell Market Commentary

On Monday, hopes for further rate cuts propelled the markets to rally to a record close. The Dow rose 191.92, or 1.38 percent, to close at 14,087.55. The Dow rose as high as 14,115.51 to erase its previous intraday high of 14,021.95 set July 17. The Nasdaq composite index rose 39.49, or 1.46 percent, to close at 2,740.99, its highest level in more than six and a half years. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 20.29, or 1.33 percent, to close at 1,547.04, near its record high. The Russell 2000 index was up 19.31, or 2.39 percent, to close at 824.76. The Institute for Supply Management said the manufacturing sector grew in September at the slowest pace in six months and the index of manufacturing activity registered at 52.0 in September. Bonds moved higher with the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note falling to 4.55 percent from 4.59 percent. The dollar was mixed against other major currencies. Gold prices rose. A barrel of light, sweet crude fell $1.42 to $80.24.
