As the London 2012 Summer Olympics wind down, Marketwire continues to monitor three key underlying discussion themes on its Summer Games Dashboard that emerged prior to the Games: social media and communications, transportation and infrastructure, and security. Since tracking began on July 27, the number of mentions about these topics on Twitter, blogs, news sites and forums fluctuated and eventually decreased, while discussion content sharply changed focus:

  • Social Media and Communications: 36,990 mentions today; 455,628 during the past seven days
    Initial concerns were about network overload and time-delayed broadcasts. Today's conversations focus on how social media is an event spoiler for people residing in time zones west of the UK.

  • Transportation and Infrastructure: 5,700 mentions today; 66,947 during the past seven days
    Current discussions surround the just-launched 48-hour strike by London Underground cleaners in a dispute over an Olympic bonus payment. Initially, Londoners were concerned about their inability to get around town. As the Games progressed, they expressed pleasure at how easy it has been to navigate the city during the past two-plus weeks.

  • Security: 8,200 mentions today; 87,858 during the past seven days
    Most tweets today acknowledge that security is tight, but people are complimenting the G4S on their speed and efficiency during security checks. Initial discussions focused on concerns about overly tight, unwieldy security operations and even that G4S would not be able to provide enough trained staff in time.
