Marley Drug to Test the ALRT Health-e-Connect (HeC) Diabetes Glucose Management Program

Working With Horizon MedCorp and the ALRT Health-e-Connect Diabetes Management System

WINSTON-SALEM, NC--(Marketwire - March 10, 2011) - Horizon MedCorp, a national healthcare equipment and supply company specializing in diabetes and respiratory services, announces Marley Drug of Winston-Salem, NC will be implementing a study with the Diabetes Glucose Management program offered by Horizon. The program centerpiece is the ALRT HeC system that allows for remote monitoring of blood sugar values and comprehensive communications platform for adherence reminders, education reminders and behavior modification. The evaluation will focus on data collection regarding user satisfaction, ease of use and adherence. The HeC also allows for electronic glucose test strip use documentation to assist in accurate prescription refills.

Marley Drug is a leading community pharmacy serving southern Forsyth and northern Davidson counties of North Carolina. Dr. Dave Marley, pharmacist and CEO of Marley Drug, states, "pharmacies are looking for systems to help provide additional health and medication management services to their customers, including documenting glucose test supplies utilization to base prescription refills on. More and more health plans are recognizing the added value of consultation and education that pharmacists provide and are now reimbursing pharmacists for this service. We are evaluating the HeC, with its communications platform and data retrieval capability, on its assistance with our customer services objectives."

Marley Drug is a member of the National Community Pharmacists Association, which includes more than 23,000 independent community pharmacies and more than 62,000 pharmacists. "Independent community pharmacists are service focused and building relationships by providing added value to our customers. Local pharmacists can provide expert medication counselling and other cost-saving services that help mitigate the $290 billion that is estimated to be spent on an annual basis as the result of patients who do not adhere properly to their medication regimen, according to the NACPA," adds Dr. Marley.

A clinical trial using the HeC resulting in significant reduction in A1C values was published in Diabetes Care magazine¹. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "In general, every percentage point drop in A1C blood test results (e.g. from 8% to 7%), can reduce the risk of microvascular complications (eye, kidney and nerve diseases) by 40%²."

Horizon MedCorp has targeted select users in three distinct health service operations to conduct limited, controlled evaluations of the HeC system until FDA clearance of the HeC System is received. Each of the three represents a uniquely different point of care for those living with diabetes. ALR Technologies submitted a 510(k) application to the FDA for the ALRT HeC System on July 23, 2010 and recently announced they have provided response to questions from the FDA regarding the application.
