Martin Long Elected to ETFO Executive

TORONTO TEACHER ELECTED TO ELEMENTARY TEACHERS' FEDERATION OF ONTARIO EXECUTIVE Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 17, 2005) - Martin Long, a teacher with the Toronto District School Board and president of the Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT), was elected to a third term on the Executive of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) at the federation's annual meeting today.

"ETFO must ensure that the government continues to deliver on its commitments to invest in public education and to give teachers the respect they deserve," Long told the 600 meeting delegates. "The federation must actively and effectively promote teachers and the teaching profession.

"Public education is the foundation of a vigorous and democratic society," Long said, "and as teachers and teacher representatives we must work to defend and promote it."

Martin Long has taught junior and intermediate grades in inner city and alternative schools in Toronto for more than 30 years. In addition to his role as president he has served the Elementary Teachers of Toronto as chief negotiator, grievance coordinator, and the liaison to the new member and human rights committees.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) represents 65,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher union in Canada outside of Quebec.
