Mascot Introduces New and Convenient Recycling In Wood Buffalo

Fort McMurray, Alberta (June 9, 2006) — A new friend of recycling — the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo frog — will be attending the Household Hazardous Waste Round-up on Saturday to encourage our community to recycle more.

The recycling frog will spread the word that recycling in Wood Buffalo is easy and convenient. To help residents recycle more, the frog will distribute fact sheets containing details of how to prepare recyclable materials, the locations of the recycling depots, and the new products that are manufactured from recycled materials.

"Recycling makes sense for our community and our environment. Recycling is an effective way of reducing the amount of waste going to our landfill and ensuring we get the most use possible from products ranging from newspapers to tin cans," said Mayor Melissa Blake. "Our community loves the outdoors, and our recycling frog will remind us that recycling is good for the environment."

The recycling frog is making his debut during Environment Week, when the municipality, its recycling partner Suncor Energy and the community are involved in many events that focus on keeping our environment healthy. The frog needs a name, and Wood Buffalo residents can submit their choice for name to the "Name the Mascot!" contest, which will be promoted all summer.

"The recycling frog will make appearances at a number of events throughout the summer, reminding everyone in our community that we can recycle more," said Heather Kennedy, Suncor Energy's vice president of Employee and Community Relations. "Recycling is quick, easy and convenient, so let's all take a few minutes each week to prepare our materials for the depots."

Wood Buffalo also has a new recycling website — — that gives detailed information on the products that can be recycled, depot locations, how to prepare recyclables, tips on reducing, re-using, recycling, links to other related sites and much more. The site also has details about the "Name the Mascot" contest, which closes September 8.

The Household Hazardous Waste Round-up takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Airport Road Forestry Building where residents can drop off their unwanted household hazardous products. The Anzac Household Hazardous Waste Round-up will be held Saturday in the Community Hall from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
