Math Solutions Offers Free Webinar to Support States Transitioning to Common Core Standards

Math Solutions ePD Webinar Offers Educators Guidance and Insight into the Defining Characteristics and Shifts Needed to Implement National Education Standards

SAUSALITO, CA--(Marketwire - August 30, 2010) -  The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) -- national education standards in math and English -- have now been adopted by 36 states and Washington, D.C., but implementation will be a complex process as states rethink their teacher training, textbooks, and testing. On August 31, Math Solutions, a leading provider of K-12 mathematics professional development services, courses, and products, is hosting a free webinar to support educators as they work toward this transition.

The webinar, "Transitioning to the Common Core State Standards for Math," will strengthen the content knowledge needed to teach the CCSS with understanding and coherence. During this webinar, Math Solutions professional development experts will:

  • review the defining characteristics of the CCSS;
  • help educators understand the nature of the shifts needed to implement the CCSS;
  • discuss how to analyze current standards and how they align with the CCSS; and
  • show classroom video demonstrating instructional practices and content reflective of the CCSS.

"The success of implementing these national standards will be contingent on providing our educators with access to high-quality and substantive training and resources," says Christine Willig, CEO of Math Solutions. "For many teachers, fulfilling these standards will mean shifting both what and how they teach math. We have received a great response to this webinar and are planning a series to continue the conversation."

The new standards are expected to be in place by the 2013-2014 school year (or sooner), creating a tight timeline for implementation. The quick adoption of the CCSS is due in part to the Obama administration's Race to the Top competition. States that adopted the standards by August 2 won points in the competition for a share of the $3.4 billion to be awarded in September.
