Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA Recognized as 12th Pediatric Heart Failure Institute by Battelle Healthcare Colloquium

COLUMBUS, OH --(Marketwired - June 02, 2016) - Battelle Healthcare Colloquium has recognized Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA as an Accredited Pediatric Heart Failure Institute. Mattel Children's is the second pediatric facility in California and the 12th in the nation to earn this distinction.

"The team at UCLA has put together an outstanding pediatric heart failure and heart transplant team. It is multidisciplinary, collaborative, and maintains the highest standards for family-centered patient care, research and innovation," said Dr. Joseph Rossano, Executive Director of the Cardiac Center and Medical Director of the Pediatric Heart Failure and Transplant Program at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, who was part of the review team for Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA.

"The Children's Heart Center at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA is truly honored to receive this prestigious accreditation from the Battelle Healthcare Colloquium," said Dr. Juan Alejos, Clinical Professor of Pediatric Cardiology at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA. "Our team of cardiologists, surgeons, nurses, social workers, technicians and staff are proud to be providers of world-class care to children with heart failure, and the accreditation process has validated the work we are doing. We look forward to collaborating with other Colloquium pediatric centers in an effort to share best practices and continuously improve heart failure care for all children."

Battelle Healthcare Colloquium's unique accreditation process builds on the member hospitals' prior improvement experience. Working within Battelle Healthcare Colloquium's continuum of care model, member hospitals select milestones within four established domains of heart failure-Community, Hospital, Clinician, and Science. As part of their accreditation milestone work, Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA developed a weekly support group for heart failure, ventricular assist device and transplant patients and their caregivers. The group's goal is to decrease the feeling of isolation among patients and their caregivers by providing a safe space to discuss coping skills and positive lifestyle changes. Interpreter services are included in the group to ensure participation is open to both English and Spanish speaking families.

Battelle Healthcare Colloquium is the only accrediting body offering Pediatric Heart Failure Accreditation. Using coaching based methods, Battelle Healthcare Colloquium works one on one with hospitals to meet their heart failure care goals. Colloquium members also have the opportunity to serve as peer reviewers during onsite accreditation visits and provide peer-to-peer feedback and a full spectrum review of improvements. Our hospital membership organization comprises 30 distinguished adult and pediatric hospitals, 11 of which have top pediatric cardiology programs as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. The pediatric members of Battelle Healthcare Colloquium continue to showcase preeminence and have the desire to meaningful contribute to making the world a better place for children with heart failure and their families.
