Matthew Boswell Appointed Senior Deputy Commissioner of Competition of the Criminal Matters Branch

John Pecman, Commissioner of Competition, is pleased to announce that Matthew Boswell has been appointed to the position of Senior Deputy Commissioner of Competition of the Criminal Matters Branch (CMB).

Mr. Boswell first joined the Competition Bureau in January 2011 as Associate Deputy Commissioner of the CMB as part of a two-year appointment arranged through the Interchange Canada Program. He later accepted the position of Acting Senior Deputy Commissioner of Competition of the CMB when John Pecman was appointed as Interim Commissioner of Competition in September 2012.

Before joining the Bureau, Mr. Boswell was Senior Litigation Counsel for the Enforcement Branch of the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC). In this capacity, he represented staff of the Commission before various levels of court, as well as before the Commission. At the OSC, Mr. Boswell also provided legal advice on all aspects of enforcement matters, including the use of investigatory powers and tools.

Since joining the Bureau, Mr. Boswell has been a valued member of the management team, enabling the Bureau to benefit from his criminal prosecution and defence background.

  • Mr. Boswell previously served as an Assistant Crown Attorney for the Ministry of the Attorney General (Ontario) preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions.

  • He has also worked in private practice at Smith Lyons and Ormston List Frawley as a civil and criminal defence litigation counsel on a variety of files with a focus on regulatory and criminal matters.
