Maximizing a Healthy Brain Is Topic of Saints Mary and Elizabeth's Dinner-With-Docs Program

March 27 Program Features Buffet Dinner, Health Screenings, Exhibits and More

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - Mar 14, 2012) - Learn how to maximize brain function and recognize common neurological diseases at an "Avoid a Brain Wreck," dinner-with-the-docs program from 6 to 8 p.m. on March 27 at The Bedford Restaurant, 1612 W. Division St., Chicago. The buffet-dinner will feature physicians from Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (SMEMC).

The program will focus on brain health and how it can affect our lives, exercises to improve functioning, and symptoms and types of brain disorders. SMEMC speakers include David Berdy, M.D., family medicine specialist; Roger Lichtenbaum, M.D., neurological surgery; Shilpa Tilwali, M.D., neurology; and Nancy Tutor, nurse practitioner, neurosurgery, who will serve as moderator.

Common brain disorders include Alzheimer's disease, which affects an estimated 5 million Americans, as well as brain cancer, epilepsy and stroke. While many brain disorders are treatable through physical therapy, medication or surgery, some remain incurable.

One of the most common symptoms of brain disease is seizures, which can generally be classified in two categories. They include focal (partial) seizures, which occur on a single side of the brain, and generalized, which is a result of abnormal activity on both sides of the brain.

"We are thrilled to present this outstanding program -- featuring four experts talking about the important topic of brain health," said Margaret McDermott, CEO/executive vice president, SMEMC. "Our goal is to help educate the community on an array of neurological topics, from diseases to prevention to keeping our brains healthy."

The program will feature dinner, exhibits, health screenings and an opportunity to talk with physicians. Tickets are $25 per person. Registration is required by calling 877-RES-INFO (877-737-4636) or click here to register online.

SMEMC provides comprehensive medical and surgical care at the Neuroscience Integrative Center. The center brings together the expertise of neurosurgeons, pain specialists, radiologists and physical therapists -- who utilize the latest techniques and advanced technology to find solutions for nerve, back and spinal pain.
