HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - June 8, 2012) - New residential construction in Halifax decreased last month compared to May 2011 according to preliminary data1 released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). There were 201 housing starts recorded in May compared to 233 last year.
"New home construction in Halifax decreased last month," said Matthew Gilmore senior market analyst with CMHC's Atlantic Business Centre. "The decline in total starts is attributed to fewer multiple-unit starts breaking ground in May as construction began on 110 units compared to 146 last year," added Gilmore. "In the single-detached segment of the market, starts increased for the fourth time in 2012 as 91 units were started compared to 87 last year," said Gilmore.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in May were up seven per cent to 17,058 units compared to 15,962 a year ago. Single-detached starts decreased three per cent to 6,145 units, while multiple starts increased 13 per cent to 10,913 units in May.
