May Housing Starts Up in Windsor

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 8, 2012) - New home starts were up in May in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) according to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Builders laid foundations for 73 homes compared to 53 in May 2011.

"In May, single-detached construction was higher than in the same month in 2011, a trend which has occurred throughout 2012," said Paul Tessaro, Market Analyst for CMHC. "Repeat buyers often prefer this housing type. Also, the relative affordability of homeownership in Windsor allows some first-time buyers to purchase new single-detached housing."

May starts in the Windsor area included 61 single-detached homes, two semi-detached homes and ten townhomes.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 65 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable Housing solutions. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making informed decisions.
