Mayor Villaraigosa, Aviation Officials to Open New Center Taxiway at Los Angeles International Airport

New Southside Taxiway Will Improve Airfield Safety at LAX

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - June 23, 2008) -

WHAT: Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, joined by Los Angeles City
Councilmembers Bill Rosendahl and Janice Hahn, federal
aviation and airport officials, will hold a news conference
to announce the completion and opening of a new center
taxiway that will improve airfield safety, reduce the
number of runway incursions, and improve the airport's
capability to efficiently handle new large aircraft
scheduled to begin daily service at LAX this fall.

The $83-million center taxiway is 10,000 feet long and 75
feet wide. It is located parallel and between the two
runways on the south side of the airport. Completion of the
center taxiway, which took 14 months, also finishes an
overall $333-million South Airfield Improvement Program,
which included the demolition, relocation and
reconstruction of Runway 25 Left, which occurred between
                July 2006 and April 2007.

From 2000-2003, LAX experienced the highest number of
runway incursions of any U.S. commercial airport, with
the majority happening on the south airfield.

WHERE: Former Air Traffic Control Tower

VISUAL: From the control tower, see a panoramic view of LAX and
watch aircraft land on outer south Runway 25 Left, exit
runway and taxi along new center taxiway, and cross inner
Runway 25 Right to terminal gates. This "zig-zag" path
replaces the former high-speed taxiways, and slows landing
aircraft sufficiently to result in reduction in runway
