Mayor W.J. "Jim" Lane Proclaims September 19 "Lupus Awareness Day" in Scottsdale

America's Largest Lupus Walk Program Takes Place in Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwired - September 09, 2015) - The Lupus Foundation of America welcomes Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane as a special guest at its Annual Walk To End Lupus Now(TM) event at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 19. Mayor Lane will issue the official "Lupus Awareness Day" proclamation during opening ceremonies. The largest lupus walk program in the country, Walk to End Lupus Now events are held in more than 60 cities, bringing together community members -- lupus patients, friends, families, health care providers and celebrities -- to raise money for lupus research and education programs, increase awareness of the disease and rally public support for those who feel its brutal impact.

"For years now, it's been my pleasure to support the Lupus Foundation of America and their mission to find a cure for this mysterious disease that affects so many," said Mayor Jim Lane.

An estimated 1.5 million Americans and 5 million people worldwide have lupus. Despite the widespread prevalence of lupus, research on the disease has remained underfunded, relative to its scope and devastation. And only one drug has ever been developed specifically to treat lupus and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

"While we work to solve the cruel mystery of lupus, we must ensure that all Arizona residents affected by lupus have access to the resources and support they need," said Sandra C. Raymond, President and CEO of Lupus Foundation of America. "By coming together to raise funds and awareness, Phoenix area residents are showing their power and support for people with lupus, families, friends and entire the community of those suffering with lupus."

Every step taken and dollar raised supports the Lupus Foundation of America's mission to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus.

Registration for the Walk is open online at, or register onsite at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, 75th and Main, beginning at 3 p.m. the day of the event. Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals is a national sponsor of Walk to End Lupus Now and the Arizona Arthritis and Rheumatology Research is a regional sponsor of the Walk.

About Lupus
Lupus is an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of the body. It is difficult to diagnose, hard to live with and a challenge to treat. Lupus is a cruel mystery because it is hidden from view and undefined, has a range of symptoms, strikes without warning, and has no known cause and no known cure. Its health effects can range from a skin rash to a heart attack. Lupus is debilitating and destructive and can be fatal, yet research on lupus remains underfunded relative to diseases of similar scope and devastation.
