Traffic Cabinet Uses Direct Current to Promote Energy Efficiency and Safety


VISTA, CA--(Marketwired - Jul 8, 2014) - McCain Inc., a recognized leader in the supply of advanced transportation solutions for safety and mobility, today announced plans to preview its low-voltage ATC cabinet at the International Municipal Sign Association's 119th Annual Conference. Leveraging the efficiency gains of direct current, the cabinet offers a reduced energy footprint and improved safety measures for city personnel and motorists.

McCain's low-voltage ATC cabinet architecture features high-density components powered by direct current. With inherently reduced voltage (< 50 volts), the DC components reduce the risk of accidental shock or electrocution and the effects of short circuiting. The resulting cabinet is safer to operate and maintain, and compliant with the National Electrical Code's standards on inadvertent contact with live or arcing parts. By designing the high-efficiency switch packs to be compatible with ultra low-power LED traffic signals, the cabinet also reduces the total power consumption per intersection. In addition to monetary savings, the lower power requirements can boost the longevity and effectiveness of battery backup systems used to maintain intersection operations during power outages.

The low-voltage cabinet is the latest design in McCain's revolutionary ATC cabinet series, which combines the best of existing standards and modern technology for enhanced intersection safety and operational efficiencies. Like its AC-powered equivalent, the low-voltage ATC cabinet can easily manage complex intersections with a double density format that provides a 32-channel output and 120 detector input capability. It also features continuous load current monitoring for increased operational safety and maintenance diagnostics. Production for the DC cabinet and components is slated for 2015.
