McCormick Launches New Expanded Line of 100 Per Cent Organic Herbs, Spices and Seasonings

LONDON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 13, 2007) - McCormick Canada has launched a new expanded line of 100 per cent organic herbs, spices and seasonings certified by Quality Assurance International (QAI) to meet a growing demand by Canadian consumers for healthier, better tasting organic products.

The McCormick Gourmet 100 % Organic line of herbs, spices and seasonings includes Turkish Bay Leaves, Coriander, Cayenne Pepper, Chinese Ginger, Cinnamon from Saigon, Cloves, Cumin, Italian Seasoning, Marjoram Leaves, Red Pepper, and Rosemary from Spain.

"We've expanded our McCormick organic line from eight varieties in 2002 to 29 today to satisfy increasing demand from Canadian consumers for organic products that have eliminated or minimized chemicals, are healthier and taste better," says John Szustaczek, Product Manager, McCormick Canada. "The McCormick team has more than 100 years of spice buying experience and our buyers travel to more than 30 countries to source the finest, 100 per cent organic herbs, spices and seasonings. Each step of the process is closely monitored by McCormick including farming, harvesting, drying, collecting, cleaning and shipping with a minimum of one inspection annually."

Demand for organic products is growing, where 52% of Canadian households bought an organic product in the past year, up from 46% the previous year (according to Nielsen Homescan, latest 52 weeks ending August 5, 2006). And according to Ipsos Reid in a June 2006 Hot Trends study, 45% of Canadians claim to always, usually or sometimes opt for an organic product when it is available.

More than 400 chemical pesticides are used in conventional farming, where organic farming does not use synthetic chemicals. Organic food, on average, contains higher levels of vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium. And organic standards do not allow genetically modified crops and ingredients.

"If it doesn't say "100% Organic" on the bottle, then between 5 and 30 per cent of the contents can be non-organic," notes Szustaczek.

According to Canadian government organic management standards, if the label claims the product is 100 per cent organic, then 100 per cent of the ingredients must be Organic. If a label claims to be "Organic" then a minimum of 95 per cent of the ingredients must be organic and up to 5 per cent can be non-organic. If a product claims to be "Made with Organic Ingredients" then a minimum of 70 per cent of the ingredients must be Organic.

"McCormick's Gourmet 100% Organic are lower priced on a per gram basis than almost all of the competition (based on the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price)," adds Szustaczek. "Pricing for the McCormick Gourmet 100% Organic line of herbs, spices and seasonings does carry a slight premium, 10-15 per cent, although that is low compared to organic premium averages of between 30 per cent and 50 per cent."

Available at major grocery stores across Canada, the newly expanded line of McCormick Gourmet 100% Organic herbs, spices and seasonings, certified Kosher by the Orthodox Union (OU), carries an MSRP of between $4.39 and $7.29.
