McGuinty government right in shining light on Hydro One

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 7, 2006) - "The recent Auditor General's report is a good start in dealing with the problems at Hydro One," said Andrew Müller, President of the Society of Energy Professionals. "We have been requesting on a number of occasions that the financial affairs of Hydro One be examined by an outside body. The Auditor General's report confirms our suspicions about the need for tighter controls and better management."

The report by Auditor General Jim McCarter found that corporate policies were not being properly followed and that expenses were not being properly recorded.

"Premier McGuinty is right when he says, 'Whenever you have an organization that large, whether it's in the public sector or in the private sector, there are always going to be some people who misbehave, who act irresponsibly and give the others a bad name.' The actions by senior management, reflects poorly on the men and women who work hard for the organization and the taxpayers of Ontario," said Müller.

"We call on Premier McGuinty to extend whistle-blower protection to staff at Hydro One, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and other Crown corporations so that staff can report these abuses without fear of losing their jobs," said Müller. "The more light we shine in these areas the more confidence taxpayers will have in the system."
