McGuinty Liberals "Put Off" Support for Eastern Ontario

KINGSTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 8, 2007) - NDP Candidate for Kingston and the Islands Rick Downes says Eastern Ontario families have more evidence that Dalton McGuinty Liberals put themselves before the community.

"Dalton McGuinty 'put off' an investment Eastern Ontario families needed - and I think they should re-pay the favour and put off voting for him this election," said Downes.

In today's Kingston Whig Standard, McGuinty Minister Greg Sorbara reveals his government had the funds available for and Eastern Ontario Development Fund but "put off" the funding so they could campaign on the issue.

Sorbara says: "We were familiar with the fund and we just made the decision, right or wrong, to say we're going to put that off for consideration down the road... We made a decision that provision for that kind of fund in eastern Ontario ought to be included in our next budget and therefore we decided to put it in the platform."

After pretending to be struggling to balance the budget this year and last the McGuinty Government was forced to admit the treasury had a surprise $2.3 billion surplus last year, and is expected to have a $750 million surplus this fiscal year.

"Dalton McGuinty found the money for multimillion dollar slush fund handouts and a pay raise for himself, but he 'put off' help for Eastern Ontario. Working families deserve better," said Downes. "You can count on Howard Hampton and the NDP to fight for a fair deal for you and your family."
