McGUINTY LIBERALS TREADING WATER AFTER TWO YEARS ON THE JOB

PEOPLE OF ONTARIO STILL WAITING FOR "REAL" CHANGE Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 12, 2005) - "Half way through their term the McGuinty Liberals are suffering from long-term memory loss and short-term political fixes," Ontario Federation of Labour president Wayne Samuelson said today at Queen's Park after hearing the provincial government's speech from the Throne.

"It's about time someone reminded this government that abandoning critical promises to the people of this province is not good government."

The pre-election McGuinty promised to end the "failed policies of creeping privatization". The 23 hospitals under threat of privatization in 2005 would like to remind the Premier of that promise. Premier McGuinty promised to rebuild public services and said when electioneering, "We believe in policy based on evidence, not ideology. We've seen no evidence that private care is any cheaper, but plenty that it's more expensive and of lesser quality."

"We will hold the line on taxes," McGuinty said and then turned around in his first budget and introduced a health care tax that takes over $600 a year out of the pockets of every Ontario citizen and delisted important medical services.

"We will protect jobs in the North." The reality is forestry and industry in the North are in crisis and are shedding jobs monthly.

The long list of promises made to the working people of this province has not gotten any shorter. "McGuinty promised that an Ontario Liberal government would restore successor rights for Ontario government employees," Samuelson said. "The employees are still waiting."

"Many of the laws that govern our workplaces today are still the same ones that anti-union Mike Harris put in place," Samuelson said. "For many working people - little has changed."
