TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - February 10, 2014) - Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has announced that he will table the 2014 Federal Budget in the House of Commons on February 11, 2014. Reports suggest that tomorrow's budget will emphasize federal efforts to constrain the growth in government spending, while also introducing targeted measures to increase government tax revenue.

In recent years, the federal government has introduced a variety of anti-avoidance measures to counteract certain types of tax planning and broaden the tax base. Particular attention has been paid to certain cross-border transactions and structures that are perceived by the government to erode the Canadian tax base. Tomorrow's budget may continue this trend by introducing measures aimed at business, investment and cross-border activities that the government views as undesirable.

The enactment of such measures could have a significant impact on the operations of both domestic and multinational businesses with operations in Canada.

Michael Templeton, Todd Miller and Michel Ranger are tax lawyers with McMillan LLP and are available to discuss the budget and the federal government's tax plans.

Michael Templeton is a partner in McMillan's Tax Group and practices in the areas of business taxation, international transactions and tax litigation. Before joining the firm, Michael represented the Canada Revenue Agency in tax appeals and has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada on tax issues.

Todd Miller is a partner in McMillan's Tax Group and has broad experience counselling clients on domestic and cross-border financing transactions, transfer pricing and international tax treaty matters, securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations and business divestitures.

Michel Ranger is a partner in McMillan's Tax Group and advises clients on a wide range of domestic and international taxation matters and has specialized expertise in structuring domestic and multinational commercial acquisitions, divestitures, reorganizations, financings and business combinations.
