MDN Northern Mining and SOQUEM Launch Drilling Program at Clairy Project, Quebec

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 20, 2005) - MDN NORTHERN MINING ("MINIERES DU NORD" or "MDN") (TSX:MDN) and SOQUEM INC. ("SOQUEM") are pleased to announce the launching of a drilling program to test new targets at their Clairy Project in Quebec. The objective of this exploration program is to discover new economic VMS (volcanogenic massive sulfide) deposits in the property.

Following a helicopter-borne eletromagnetic and magnetic VTEM survey covering the entire property in detail, several new geophysical targets were identified in five volcanic horizons considered to be favorable for VMS deposits. Previous drilling in the Clairy Project, made by SOQUEM in 1995 (ref.: GM54511), intersected a sulphide lens called De Maures, assaying 10% Zn, 1.3% Cu and 24.3 g/t Ag over 9.1 m. The current geophysical survey confirmed that the volcanic horizon containing this mineralized sulphide lens extends for 4 km within the property. The property is located in the Frotet-Evans greenstone belt, which is known to be prospective and hosts several deposits, including the Troilus mine, which has produced over one million ounces of gold and contains reserves of 33.1 million tonnes grading 0.1% Cu and 0.9 g/t Au.

The first phase of the program consists of 1,800 metres of diamond drilling in nine holes testing at least two targets in four favorable volcanic horizon. Most of the targets being tested are completely new and were only detected due to the sensitivity of the VTEM system.

This project is a 50/50 joint venture between MDN NORTHERN MINING and SOQUEM, the project operator. The property consists of 108 claims covering 17.28 km2, located in the Clairy and 1224 townships, some 120 km north of the city of Chibougamau and accessible by forestry roads.

This current program will be carried out under the supervision of geological engineer Laury Schmitt, a qualified person as defined by National Instrument 43-101. He has been employed by SOQUEM since 1992 and has more than 14 years of exploration experience.

MDN NORTHERN MINING is a Montreal-based Canadian exploration company which holds a 30% interest in the Tulawaka gold mine in Tanzania and a majority interest in 25 adjacent licences in Tanzania, a majority interest in four properties in Eritrea, and other gold and base metal exploration interests in Quebec, Canada. SOQUEM is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SGF Mineral inc., a subsidary of Societe generale de financement du Quebec (SGF). The SGF, the Quebec industrial and financial holding company, has as its mission to undertake economic development projects in the industrial sector in cooperation with partners and in compliance with the economic development policies of the Government of Quebec.
