MDN NORTHERN MINING: Another Gold Discovery in The Tulawaka Region, Tanzania

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 18, 2005) - MDN NORTHERN MINING (MINIERES DU NORD) (TSX:MDN) is pleased to announce a further gold discovery in the Tulawaka Gold Mine region, Tanzania, from the recently completed first phase drilling campaign.

This discovery has been found in a Prospecting License optioned from Tan Range Explorations, located about 15 km from the Tulawaka Gold Mine process plant. The target tested in this program was previously completely unknown; it covers an area approximately 0.4 km long by 0.3 km wide and was tested initially by four drill fences comprising 23 drill holes for a total of 1,475 m. The more significant drill intersections from this initial drill program are summarized below:

Hole Interval Length Gold
number (m) (m) (g/t)
NTRAB 14 28 - 37 9 7.27
NTRAB 15 8 - 9 1 1.60
14 - 16 2 2.60
NTRAB 16 4 - 7 3 7.63
29 - 31 2 22.45
NTRAB 17 5 - 9 4 13.34
NTRAB 18 6 - 7 1 3.70
NTRAB 20 7 - 9 2 2.03

The drill holes were sited "heel-to-toe" on the fences to give complete overlap, and were drilled at an angle of 60 degrees from the horizontal to a target depth of 70 m. The drill fences were spaced approximately 150 m from each other. Drilling was done with rotary air blast (RAB) and reverse circulation (RC) techniques. Because of the nature of such drilling techniques, it is not possible to determine the true width and orientation of the mineralized intersections. Samples from this program were prepared and analyzed by Humac Laboratories in Tanzania. The anomalous results were subsequently independently checked by the ALS Chemex laboratory in South Africa. The drilling program was carried out under the direction of Geologist Brian Lloyd, supervised by Carlos Bertoni, P.Geo., a Qualified Person under NI 43-101.

A follow-up drilling program is now being arranged in order to further investigate the gold mineralization that has just been discovered, and to probe two additional targets in other nearby Prospecting Licenses. A map showing MDN Northern Mining's current tenement interests in the Tulawaka area is available on the Company's web site (

Carlos Bertoni, CEO of MDN NORTHERN MINING, stated: "This is the second completely new gold discovery we have made resulting from our recently completed drill program in the region. This program tested three targets and two of them have revealed significant gold intersections. The third target did not provide significant results and will be abandoned. The intersections now being disclosed are about 10 km away from our other discovery and represent an entirely different gold occurrence. Both gold discoveries are interpreted as being associated with shear zones that are close to the contact of volcanic and granitic rocks, and both remain open on strike and at depth. We are confident that yet more significant gold occurrences will be found in this region, which has remained virtually unexplored until now".

MDN NORTHERN MINING is a Montreal-based Canadian exploration company that holds a 30% interest in the Tulawaka gold project, which went into commercial production in March of 2005, and a majority interest in 25 adjacent mineral licenses in Tanzania, a majority interest in three licenses in Eritrea, and other gold and base metal exploration interests in Quebec, Canada.
