MEALS ON WHEELS MOVING ON LINE!

Ontario Community Support Association and the Canadian Association For Community Care to Launch National Online Networking Group Attention: Health/Medical Editor, News Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 29, 2005) - This week will see the launch of a new and exciting cooperative project to move Meals on Wheels into the twenty-first century.

For the first time ever, Meals on Wheels organizations across Canada will have the opportunity to Network online. The Meal Services NetGroup is a joint pilot project with the Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA) and the Canadian Association for Community Care (CACC) and will officially launch Wednesday March 30, 2005.

The Meal Services NetGroup is a dynamic online network created to provide an opportunity for community meal programs (Meals on Wheels/ Congregate Dining) to:
• share information and documents
• have key issues discussions with colleagues and;
• post your questions to an experienced network of people with much to share.

"The unique benefit of this networking opportunity is that sharing of information is not limited by geographic, financial or human resource barriers. It is the first time that community meal programs across Ontario and Canada have had an opportunity to network with their colleagues on a daily basis", says Susan Thorning, Chief of Operations, OCSA.

The first major project of the Meal Services NetGroup is a survey of meals programs across Canada. The CACC/OCSA Meals on Wheels (MOW) survey asks Meals on Wheels providers, volunteers, and clients to look ahead and plan for the future. The report of the survey will provide critical information to help programs remain dynamic, relevant and sustainable.

"The Meal Services NetGroup is a prime example of how to use the power of technology to deliver health care," said George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. "The Ontario Community Support Association and the Canadian Association for Community Care have put innovation in action for the benefit of patients across Canada."

In addition to the Meal Services NetGroup, the site will be a hub of activity and information exchange for OCSA member organizations providing service in three categories: community support, in home support and health services.

This NetGroup pilot project will continue until January 2006. It has been made possible through funding from The Trillium Foundation.
