Media Advisory/2006 Annual General Meeting of RSC: The Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada-New Fellows, Medallists and Symposium

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 14, 2006) - Seventy-one top Canadian scientists, researchers, academics and artists will be honoured by RSC (Royal Society of Canada): the Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada, this Sunday, November 19, 2006. Each year, RSC elects a limited number of distinguished scholars, researchers and scientists following a rigorous nomination process. This year's new Fellows will be inducted at a special ceremony, held at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in the afternoon of November 19.

RSC also honours meritorious scholars and researchers with its medals and awards. The presentation of the Society's medals for 2006 will take place during RSC's Banquet and Awards Ceremony, also held at the Canadian Museum of Civilization on the evening on November 19. Fifteen Canadians will be given their awards in recognition of a lifetime of devoted work.

This year again, RSC: The Academies welcomes numerous guests to both events, members of the government and of educational institutions as well as dignitaries.

RSC will also be hosting its annual Symposium on Friday, November 17, 2006, at the Canada Science and Technology Museum. The theme of the day is Water in Canada and the World: Rising Tensions in the 21st Century - Issues and Solutions, with expert presentations given, such as: Water and the Oil Industry, Drinking Water Safety from Walkerton to Kashechewan - Progress or Regress? and Assessing, Monitoring and Setting Targets: the Work of the United Nations in Freshwater.
