10th Anniversary of Bell Capital Cup Kicks Off with Gloucester facing Victoria

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 27, 2008) - The 2009 Bell Capital Cup, the world's premier atom and peewee hockey tournament, officially opens today, when the Gloucester Rangers host the Victoria Racquet Club Kings (B.C.) in the major peewee AAA division at the Bell Sensplex at 7 p.m. City of Ottawa mayor, Larry O'Brien, along with tournament chair Cyril Leeder will be joined by Frank Gonzalez of the IIHF, Gary Cameron of Bell Canada and Hubert Seguin of the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association in a ceremonial puckdrop to officially kick off the 10th anniversary of the Bell Capital Cup.

Over the next five days, 485 teams from five countries will compete in 19 divisions and four age groups at venues across the Ottawa region.

The following are a few highlights of the events scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 27:

Team Canada open practice at Scotiabank Place

Team Canada open practice: Saturday, Dec. 27, at 12:45 p.m.

All teams participating in the tournament, along with fans, are invited to watch Team Canada practise at Scotiabank Place. Those attending the practice are asked to enter Scotiabank Place via Gate 1. Team Canada will host Team Kazakhstan on Sunday, Dec. 28, at 3:30 p.m.

Esso friendly games

Teams will tune up for this year's tournament with Esso friendly games at the Bell Sensplex from 12:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A variety of international teams will participate in friendly exhibition games prior to the start of the tournament.

12:15 p.m. - Mattamy Homes Arena - German Eagles vs. Toronto Colts

1:15 p.m. - Mattamy Homes Arena - Jokerit Blue (Finland) vs. Kanata Blazers

2 p.m. - Scotiabank Arena - Jokerit White (Finland) vs. Barrie Colts

2:15 p.m. - Ottawa Citizen Arena - Jokerit Yellow (Finland) vs. Ottawa Valley Titans

3 p.m. - Scotiabank Arena - Beijing Hokay Snow Leopard vs. Carleton Place Kings

3:15 p.m. - Ottawa Citizen Arena - Burnaby Winter Club vs. Waterloo Wolves

4 p.m. - Direct Energy Arena - San Diego Saints vs. Osgoode Richmond Senators

4:15 p.m. - Mattamy Homes Arena - L.A Jr. Kings vs. New Jersey Colonials

6 p.m. - Scotibank Arena - Iqaluit Blizzard vs. Beijing Imperial Guard

European and host team welcome reception

The Bell Capital Cup and Team Tour International will host a welcome reception for European and local host teams at the Holiday Inn Select (101 Kanata Ave.) on Saturday, Dec. 27, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. This will be the first time the European and host teams from Ottawa meet face-to-face and are paired up to begin their cultural exchange through the Bell Capital Cup's billeting program.
