The UN Women Canada Award (previously UNIFEM Canada Award) is the highest accolade of the UN Women Canada National Committee whose past recipients include Her Excellency Michaëlle Jean, Former Governor General of Canada, Sally Armstrong, reporter and journalist for women's equality, Louis Frechette, Former United Nations Deputy Secretary General, Nur Jehan Mawani, Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) Kyrgyz Representative and many other illustrious personalities that have tirelessly worked to mainstream gender equality in Canada and across the world.

Each year, the UN Women Canada Award is given to honour an exceptional individual (male or female) who has contributed significantly to one or more of the following goals, through their career, volunteer activities or other endeavours including:

  • promotion of women's empowerment and gender equality;
  • elimination of violence against all women and girls;
  • protection and promotion of women's human rights;
  • strengthening of women's economic capacity;
  • transformation of government by promoting participation of women in decision-making processes;
  • contributing to a greater awareness of women's issues globally
