Media Advisory: 5th Military World Golf Championship to be Held in Ottawa

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 14, 2008) - Opening ceremonies will be held in Ottawa to kick off the 5th World Military Golf Championship, attended by participants, organizers, and Brigadier-General David Martin, Director General, Canadian Forces Personnel and Family Support Services (CFPFSS). Over 100 military golfers from 15 nations, from Bahrain to Zambia, will join their Canadian compatriots at Ottawa's Hylands Golf Club, from August 17 to 23 for the championship.

The Canadian Forces (CF) participates in international sports as a member of the Conseil international du sport militaire (CISM), an international military sports organization founded in 1948 that is open to all nations. CISM now boasts 131 member countries and holds more than 20 competitions annually. The fundamental aim of CISM is to promote sport activity and physical education between military forces as a means to foster world peace. These ideas are encapsulated in the CISM motto "Friendship through Sport". Canada currently participates in CISM basketball, fencing, golf, running, sailing, shooting, soccer, swimming, taekwondo, triathlon, volleyball and wrestling.

The opening ceremonies will occur as follows:

TIME: 08:30 a.m.
PLACE: Hampton Inn, 100 Coventry Road, Ottawa
