Media Advisory: ACWA Conference Looks at Water History, Key Issues of Today

Statewide Event Set for Nov. 30-Dec. 3 in Indian Wells

SACRAMENTO, CA--(Marketwire - November 17, 2010) - California water issues -- past, present and future -- will be in focus at the Association of California Water Agencies' (ACWA) 2010 Fall Conference & Exhibition in Indian Wells Nov. 30-Dec. 3. More than 1,700 local water leaders are expected to attend the event, which will also celebrate the statewide association's centennial anniversary.

To kick off the conference, themed "Vision for the Future," historian Dr. Kevin Starr will reflect on the history of water development in California and the state's ongoing process of inventing itself through water. Starr, an author and professor of history at the University of Southern California, will deliver his remarks at the opening breakfast on Dec. 1.

Also at the breakfast, ACWA will unveil a special book commemorating the association's 100th anniversary. "A Century of Leadership, Vision for the Future" chronicles the association's history and many of the events and milestones that define California's water community. It includes a foreword written by Starr.

A town hall meeting on Dec. 1 will examine potential new flow requirements for the Delta and implications for water supply reliability. The program is set for 2:30 p.m.

A luncheon program on Dec. 2 looks at the future of water in the West, with remarks by Patricia Mulroy, general manager of the Southern Nevada Water Authority and Las Vegas Valley Water District.

An issue forum the same day delves into recent recommendations from the Little Hoover Commission regarding the State Water Project. Other programs address groundwater, Colorado River issues, the value of water, new water conservation requirements and the $11.14 billion water bond slated for the November 2012 ballot.

ACWA will present its 2010 Legislative Leadership Award to Sen. Denise Moreno Ducheny (D-San Diego) on Dec. 2 for her role in passing key water legislation.

ACWA is a statewide association of public agencies whose 450 members are responsible for about 90% of the water delivered in California. For more information, visit www.acwa.com.
