Media Advisory: Afghan Memorial Vigil Visits Toronto-Commemoration Ceremony

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 20, 2014) - Media are invited to attend the commemoration ceremony of the Afghan Memorial Vigil, at the outset of its visit to Toronto, on Friday June 27, 2014 at Fort York National Historic Site. The Toronto visit ends on Thursday July 3.

The memorial vigil consists of the original memorial plaques (engraved granite) from the Kandahar Airfield Cenotaph and well known to veterans of the Afghan Campaign. It was repatriated at the end of the mission and is now being toured across Canada before its permanent installation in Ottawa, set for Remembrance Week 2014.

When: 8:30 a.m., Friday June 27, 2014
Where: Fort York National Historic Site, 100 Garrison Rd, Toronto, ON M5V 3K9
What: A commemoration ceremony marking the arrival of the Afghan Memorial Vigil to Toronto. It includes: the posting a four-member vigil party, wreath laying, a prayer of commemoration, and a moment of silence broken by a bagpiper playing the lament.

Access to the memorial will be reserved for private viewings by the families of the fallen and wounded until 1 p.m. on Friday, June 27, 2014. Daily hours of public access afterwards will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. until Thursday July 3.

Event - Parking is available onsite, no media accreditation is required but pre-identification is requested. Interviews with willing participants can be facilitated onsite.
