Media Advisory: Award presentation for 966 members Monday, June 11

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 8, 2012) - On Monday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 966 will present members from the Ontario Works Human Services, Public Works and Transhelp Units with awards to acknowledge and honour the members of the local for their dedication and service to the community.

The Living Arts Centre is at 4141 Living Arts Drive in Mississauga.

The award ceremony will be held outside the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga and will coincide with a Region of Peel graduation ceremony being held inside to honour Peel employees - both unionized and non-union - who have graduated from Sheridan College courses.

"We wanted to take this opportunity to let our members, who are under great stress, know that we celebrate their contributions to our community," said Mary Jo Falle, president of CUPE Local 966.

Some members from Public Works who will receive awards include: Ed Sibbick from Fleet, John Contarin from Water, Mike Wynnyczuk from Waste Water and Paul Peavoy from Roads.

The Commemorative Golden Jubilee Medal of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Transhelp Outstanding Customer Service Award to David Banks, and 2011 Spirit Awards for United Way involvement and Ontario Public Works Leader of the Year are among the awards that will be presented. There will also be an award for the Region of Peel.

The event will double as an information picket with members of CUPE Local 966 handing out materials that explain the strikes and what the local is asking for its members.

This is also an ideal opportunity to meet members of the Public Works Unit and discuss concerns about safe water, waste water and the maintenance of all Region of Peel fleet vehicles, including ambulances.
