Media Advisory-BCIT: Students Put Pedal to the Medal in a Game of 'Pedal-Polo' in Their Pre-Assembled Vehicles

BCIT Technology Teacher Education students begin with a box and end with a bike in the sixth annual Vehicle in a Box competition

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - May 8, 2009) -

WHAT: It's Vehicle in a Box with a twist. The sixth annual Vehicle in a
Box event will bring students together to play a game of
'pedal-polo' in cycle-powered vehicles they've designed and built
as part of their training to become shop teachers in British
Columbia.

These vehicles, specifically designed to accommodate two people
and built to fit inside a 30" x 18" x 16" box, will be assembled
against the stop watch. Vehicles will also be judged on weight,
rolling resistance, speed, agility, breaking, construction quality,
and over-all design. Following this, each group will join two
teams of eight for a year-end celebratory 'pedal-polo' match.
With two students on board each vehicle, teams will battle for
bragging rights.

The cyclists will then bring their vehicles together to create
'people-powered generators'. These generators will produce
enough electricity to power a sound stage for a fun evening of
live music at the BCIT campus pub provided by the band Familia.

WHEN: Wednesday, May 13 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
Vehicle assembly and judging: 9:00 am to 11:00 am
