Media Advisory: Canada Remembers the Battle of the Somme

BEAUMONT-HAMEL, FRANCE--(Marketwire - June 29, 2009) - Members of the media and the public are invited to attend a Government of Canada Remembrance Ceremony at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial National Historic Site of Canada in France. The ceremony will commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and pay tribute to all Newfoundlanders who served in the First World War, particularly the members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment killed or injured at Beaumont-Hamel on July 1, 1916.

Representing the Government of Canada at the ceremony will be the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and Philippe Leblanc, Sous-prefet of Peronne, on behalf of the French Republic. This event is open to the general public and youth from Canada will also attend.
