Media Advisory: Canada Remembers the Korean War

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 26, 2009) - A commemorative ceremony will be held at the National War Memorial to mark the 56th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. The Honourable Gordon O'Connor, Minister of State and Chief Government Whip, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and His Excellency Chan-Ho Ha, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, will participate in the ceremony.

On June 25, 1950 the forces of North Korea crossed the 38th Parallel into the Republic of Korea. This marked the beginning of hostilities which were to rage for three full years and more. More than 26,000 Canadians served in the Korean War and another 7,000 served in the theatre between the cease-fire and the end of 1955. The names of 516 Canadian dead are inscribed in the Korean War Book of Remembrance.
