VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 19, 2006) - The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, will participate in a cheque presentation ceremony in Vancouver, on Friday. The first five ex gratia symbolic payments will be made to Chinese immigrants who paid the Head Tax. These payments are related to the Government's apology to Chinese Canadians for the Head Tax and subsequent exclusion of Chinese immigrants from 1923 until 1947. Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement on June 22, 2006.

The Honourable David Emerson, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics David Emerson will accompany Minister Oda.
