CANADIANS LAUNCH CAMPAIGN TO MAKE POVERTY HISTORY

Mary Walsh, Tom Cochrane, Stephen Lewis and Anna van der Kamp want to make poverty history. They will be in Ottawa Friday to encourage the Canadian government to take action against poverty.

A news conference will be held at 10:00AM at the Charles Lynch Press Room on Friday February 11 to launch Make Poverty History, a Canadian campaign to end global poverty.

At the start of the 21st century 1.2 billion people live in abject poverty. More than 800 million go to bed hungry and 50,000 people die every day from poverty-related causes.

Make Poverty History is part of a global call to action against poverty. National campaigns are active in more than 50 countries. Well known figures including South Africa's Nelson Mandela, singer Bono and software developer Bill Gates are participating in the international campaign.

Make Poverty History calls for urgent and meaningful policy changes: More and Better Aid. Trade Justice. Cancel the Debt. End Child Poverty in Canada.

The symbol of the campaign is a White Band. The participants at the news conference, by wearing it, are showing that they want to help Make Poverty History.

Photo desk editors note: A photo op including press conference participants and a visual backdrop will be held in front of Centre Block at 10.35AM.
