Media Advisory: CELA to Define OPG Breaches of Darlington Newbuild EA Process

COURTICE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 1, 2011) - The Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) will be criticizing Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for not meeting the requirements of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) and the Darlington nuclear newbuild environmental assessment process at 1:30 pm, Monday April 4 at the federal Darlington nuclear newbuild licensing hearings in Courtice, Ontario.

The CELA presentation and report will outline breaches of the CEAA in OPG's Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) as presented to the Darlington nuclear newbuild Joint Review Panel (JRP). The report, prepared for the Peterborough environmental group Safe And Green Energy (SAGE), argues that alternatives such as wind, solar and conservation must be considered by OPG as possible replacements for the Darlington project. In addition, CELA will make the case that OPG must demonstrate that the proposed nuclear reactors at Darlington are actually needed to supply Ontario with electricity. According to CELA, OPG has failed to satisfy these points in their submission to the JRP.

A supporting presentation and document developed by the Pembina Institute will also show that a combination of non-nuclear alternatives can satisfy Ontario's electricity needs, now and in the foreseeable future. Recent contributions by renewable energy projects facilitated by the Ontario Green Energy and Economy Act (GEEA) call the necessity of the Darlington newbuild project further into question. CELA will argue that the possibilities created by the GEEA around renewables should be considered within the scope of Darlington environmental assessment.

The Darlington nuclear newbuild site licensing hearings are entering their third week at the Hope Fellowship Church, 1685 Bloor Street, Courtice, Ontario.

Directions to the Hearings; #401 to Courtice Road (Road 34) just east of Oshawa. Travel north on Courtice Road 2 kms to Bloor Street. Turn left (west) and travel 0.5 kms to Hope Fellowship Church on your left.
