Media Advisory-Ceremonial Guard: "Changing of the Guard" Debut

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 24, 2011) - The Ceremonial Guard will debut its 2011 season of the "Changing of the Guard" ceremony.

Monday's "Changing of the Guard" ceremony will mark the beginning of their public duties for 2011 in the National Capital Region.

The Ceremonial Guard is a unique unit of the Canadian Forces composed of more than 400 Regular and Reserve force soldiers from across Canada. Wearing the uniforms of The Canadian Grenadier Guards, based in Montreal, and The Governor General's Foot Guards, based in Ottawa, the unit performs ceremonial public duties throughout the National Capital Region during the summer months. All members of the Ceremonial Guard are trained members of the Canadian Forces and proudly represent the more than 35,000 soldiers of the Canadian Army.

The "Changing of The Guard" is a ceremony steeped in tradition and is the National Capital Region's most recognized military event during the summer months. Held daily on the lawns of Parliament Hill, it combines precision military drill and the stirring music of the Band of the Ceremonial Guard.

THE CEREMONIAL GUARD

The Ceremonial Guard is a unique unit of the Canadian Forces composed of more than 400 Regular and Reserve force soldiers from across Canada. Wearing the distinctive scarlet uniforms of The Canadian Grenadier Guards, based in Montreal, and The Governor General's Foot Guards, based in Ottawa, the unit performs ceremonial public duties throughout the National Capital Region during the summer months. All members of the Ceremonial Guard are trained members of the Canadian Forces, and many have deployed on international operations. The Ceremonial Guard proudly represents the more than 35,000 soldiers of the Canadian Army.

The "Changing of The Guard" is a ceremony steeped in tradition and is the National Capital Region's most recognized military event during the summer months. Held daily on the lawns of Parliament Hill, it combines precision military drill and the stirring music of the Band of the Ceremonial Guard.

The Ceremonial Guard was established by the Canadian Forces to plan, prepare, and execute Public Duties in the Nation's Capital during the summer months. Every morning at 10 O'clock, from June 27, to August 25, the unit marches from Cartier Square Drill Hall to Parliament Hill where it performs the Changing of the Guard. Ceremonial Sentries are also posted daily at Rideau Hall, the official residence of His Excellency The Governor General, and at the National War Cenotaph.
