Media Advisory/China: Sichuan Earthquake

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 13, 2008) - The International Federation of the Red Cross Red Crescent Societies given approximately $250,000 in emergency funds to support the Red Cross Society of China in delivering immediate assistance to those affected by the earthquake in Sichuan province.

Since the disaster stroke on May 12, figures released by the Sichuan provincial disaster relief headquarters indicated that more than 10,000 people are feared dead and at least 20,000 more were injured. The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) local branches have started to provide emergency relief assistance.

Experts from RCSC headquarters and the International Federation's regional team left Beijing this morning to conduct an emergency assessment in Wenchuan. The distribution of relief supplies including tents for 500 families, quilts for 5,000 people, purification materials for water as well as 600 boxes of food parcels is underway.
