Media Advisory/CIDA: Minister Verner to Attend International Cooperation Days

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 30, 2006) - The Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of International Cooperation and Minister for La Francophonie and Official Languages, will outline Canada's vision for making international aid more effective at the opening ceremony of International Cooperation Days (ICD) on Monday, October 30, 2006, in Ottawa. ICD is a forum organized by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and its partners.

Minister Verner will also present the 2006 Bill McWhinney Award of Excellence in international development during a dinner reception.

Established five years ago in memory of Bill McWhinney, former Senior Vice-President of CIDA and the first Executive Director of the Canadian University Service Overseas, the Bill McWhinney Award was designed to recognize excellence in a volunteer project or program that helps a community in a developing country to build its sustainability and help improve its future prospects.

ICD is being held from October 30 to November 1st, 2006. This year's theme is Working Together for Effective Aid.
