Media Advisory/CLB: Barbara Byers Joins Workers on Cape Breton to Mark the 2007 National Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured on the Job

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 27, 2007) - Barbara Byers, executive vice-president of the Canadian Labour Congress will be on Cape Breton Island this Saturday, April 28, to participate in two local ceremonies to mark the National Day of Mourning for workers killed and injured on the job.

Byers will be in Sydney at the Steelworkers Hall (369 Princess Street) where ceremonies get underway at 11:00 a.m. She then travels to Port Hawkesbury where she will join in the ceremonies planned for 4:30 p.m. at the Civic Centre (606 Reeves Street).

Byers will be available to media immediately after each of the Day of Mourning ceremonies.

Over 1,000 Canadians died as a result of workplace accidents and occupational illnesses in 2005, the highest number on record, despite Canada's reputation for having some of the strongest workplace health and safety laws. Byers says it's time those laws were properly enforced.

"Five lives lost every workday is five lost lives too many. Lives are not saved when governments simply adopt legislation then look the other way," says Byers.
