Media Advisory: CLC Officers Available for Media Comment on TFWP Announcement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 29, 2013) - Officers of the Canadian Labour Congress will be available for comment following an announcement by the Conservative government at 4:00 p.m. EST today regarding the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).

The TFWP was originally designed to import migrant workers in those cases where real and proven labour shortages existed, but the federal government is using the program for purposes it was never intended to serve. The number of migrant workers in Canada has risen from 101,000 in 2002 to 338,000 in 2012. Between 2007 and 2011, 30% of all net new jobs went to migrant workers.

The key to today's announcement is enforcement. Some of what is likely to be announced is already on the books but the federal government has failed to enforce the rules.

The Canadian Labour Congress, the national voice of the labour movement, represents 3.3 million Canadian workers. The CLC brings together Canada's national and international unions along with the provincial and territorial federations of labour and 130 district labour councils.
