Media Advisory: CLC's Hassan Yussuff to Participate in Montreal Event Opposing Free Trade With Colombia

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 8, 2009) - The Secretary-treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress, Hassan Yussuff, will be among trade union leaders gathering in Montreal on June 9 to voice opposition to Canada's proposed free trade deal with Colombia. Yussuff will be accompanied by Guy Ryder from the International Trade Union Confederation in Brussels, and by spokespersons for the FTQ and CSN.

The leaders will send a message about free trade with Colombia to corporate and government elite attending the International Economic Forum of the Americas in Montreal. The forum has invited Colombia's president Alvaro Uribe to attend. Colombia is one of the world's worst human rights offenders and union members are among the most frequent targets for assassination.

The Harper government signed a free trade agreement with Colombia in November 2008 and introduced implementing legislation in March. Pressure applied by the Canadian labour movement and civil society organizations forced the government to remove the bill from its legislative agenda.
