Media Advisory: Cleaners to Rally TODAY in Ottawa

Evripos employees say employer attempting to silence their voices, won't recognize their union

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 29, 2014) - Cleaners employed by Evripos Janitorial Limited at 700 Montreal Road in Ottawa will hold a rally with their supporters today.

WHAT: Workers & Supporters Rally
WHEN: TODAY @ 12 PM
WHERE: 700 Montreal Road, Ottawa

SPEAKER LIST:

  • 700 Montreal Road Cleaners, Justice for Janitors
  • Curtis Bulatovich, ACORN Canada
  • Kevin Skerrett, Solidarity Against Austerity

Evripos was recently awarded the cleaning contract at 700 Montreal Road, but has refused to recognize the workers' union. They take over the cleaning from Allen Maintenance on April 1st.

The 17 cleaners are unionized members of the Service Employees International Union Local 2 and currently have a Collective Bargaining Agreement that doesn't expire until next summer. They believe Evripos is employing a strategy to silence them by removing the majority of workers from the building and placing them in different sites, thus denying them a voice at work.

SEIU has filed a legal complaint against the company.
