Media Advisory/CMA to present PEI Premier with Gift for Province's Children: Each Elementary School to Receive Copies of 'Child's Play' by Silken Laumann

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 17, 2006) - The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is donating two copies of Silken Laumann's book entitled "Child's Play" to every elementary and consolidated school in Prince Edward Island.

CMA President Dr. Ruth Collins-Nakai and former Olympian Silken Laumann will present the books to The Honourable Pat Binns, Premier of PEI, on Monday, August 21st at the opening of the CMA's General Council Meeting in Charlottetown. (Details below)

Silken Laumann will be a guest speaker at this annual gathering of Canadian physicians where, among other things, delegates will discuss the growing crisis of children's health in the country. The CMA is very concerned about the growing number of overweight and obese kids, as well as the increased occurrence of Type II diabetes. "Child's Play" is a call to action that underlines the importance of unstructured play - or letting "kids be kids" - when it comes to our children's development and well-being.
