Media Advisory: CMA's 138th Annual Meeting Guest Speakers

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 9, 2005) - The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is pleased to announce the following guest speakers at its 138th Annual meeting from August 14-17, 2005 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. The theme for this annual meeting is Healthy People, Healthy Future. The CMA is pleased that this year's meeting is hosted in one of Canada's smoke free cities.

Keynote Speaker

Monday--The Honourable Ujjal Dosanjh, Health Minister.

Educational sessions

Sunday--Toward decoding the codes: physician-industry relationships with Dr. Murray Kopelow, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education; Ms. Lori Sheremeta, University of Alberta Faculty of Law; and Mr. Russ Williams, Rx&D.

Sunday--Climbing to new heights: pan-Canadian health goals with Dr. David Butler-Jones, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada; Dr. John Cowell, Chief Executive Officer, Health Quality Council of Alberta; and Dr. Michael McGinnis, Senior Scholar, United States Institute of Medicines.

Monday--The physician activist: getting involved, staying involved with Mr. Mike Duffy, moderator, and the following panelists: Honourable Dr. Hedy Fry, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration; Dr. Grant Hill, (former MP from Alberta); and Dr. David Swann (MLA for Calgary-Mountain View).

Strategic sessions

Monday--Climbing to new heights: pan-Canadian health goals with the Honourable Dr. Carolyn Bennett, Minister of State (Public Health).

Tuesday--Charting the future: the public-private interface in health care with Senator Hugh Segal.

Wednesday--Health human resources: towards a pan-Canadian approach with Dr. Peter Barrett, Chair, Canadian Medical Forum.
