Media Advisory: CMA's 139th Annual Meeting Guest Speakers

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 3, 2006) - The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is pleased to announce the following guest speakers at its 139th Annual meeting from August 20-23, 2006 at the Delta Prince Edward Hotel in Charlottetown, PEI. The theme for this annual meeting is Securing the Health of Tomorrow - Today.



Keynote Speaker

Monday--The Honourable Tony Clement, Health Minister.

Educational sessions

Sunday--Children's Health in Canada - We Can Do Better! with the
Honourable Landon Pearson; Mr. Rob Merrifield, Chair of the
Standing Committee on Health; Dr. Robert Conn, President and
CEO of SMARTRISK; Mr. John Kim Bell, President and CEO, Bell
and Bernard Ltd.

Sunday--The Public-Private Interface in Health Care: An International
Perspective with Richard B. Saltman, Professor of Health
Policy and Management at Emory University School of Public
Health in Atlanta, Georgia.

Monday--The physician activist: getting involved, staying involved
with moderator Mr. Don Martin, Columnist, National Post and
Calgary Herald and guest panelists: Dr. Jeannot Castonguay
(former Liberal MP), Dr. Ron Matsusaki (2006 Green Party
candidate), Dr. Robert Mullan (2006 Conservative candidate)
and Ms. Alexa McDonough, MP (NDP-Halifax).

Strategic sessions

Monday--Children's Health in Canada - We Can Do Better! with Dr. Ruth
Collins-Nakai, President of the CMA and four-time Olympian
Silken Laumann (winner of a bronze medal in the 1992 Summer
Olympics in Barcelona) and author of Child's Play:

Communities.

Tuesday--It's About Access: the Public-Private Interface in the
Funding and Delivery of Health Care, with Drs. Robert
Hollinshead and Suzanne Strasberg, CMA Task Force on the
Interface on the Public-Private Interface co-chairs; Dr.
Marshall Dahl, CMA Drafting Group on the Interface on the
Public-Private Interface chair; and Dr. Ruth Collins-Nakai,
President of the CMA.

Wednesday--Strategic Direction and Emerging Issues and Delegates'
Motions.
