Media Advisory: CNSC Public Hearings on November 7 and 8 in Becancour, Quebec

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 1, 2006) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will be holding two separate public hearings concerning in Becancour, Quebec on November 7 and 8, 2006.

The first public hearing concerns the application by Hydro-Quebec for the renewal of the operating licence for the Gentilly-2 Nuclear Generating Station, located in Becancour, Quebec.

The second public hearing is to consider the results of an Environmental Assessment Screening (EA Screening) of Hydro-Quebec's proposed modifications to the Gentilly radioactive waste management facilities and refurbishment of the Gentilly-2 nuclear generating station. The environmental assessment is being conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA).

The public hearings will begin at 10:00 a.m. on November 7, and at 8:30 a.m. on November 8 at the Auberge Godefroy, 17575 Becancour Boulevard, Becancour, Quebec. If necessary, the hearings will continue on November 9, 2006 in the afternoon.

The deadline for interventions on these two matters has passed. However, members of the public and the media are welcome to observe the public hearings. If media representatives plan to attend the proceedings, they should contact Pascale Bourassa no later than Monday, November 6, 2006.
