WHITBY, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 24, 2013) - Concerned citizens will distribute leaflets calling for an improved Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) outside of a Seniors' Forum attended by federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty on Friday morning, October 23. Although this meeting is open to constituents, many were denied access and will voice their concerns outside of its confines. Spokespersons from the concerned citizens will be available for comment to the media.
Provincial finance ministers will meet on November 1 in Toronto. They know that only 38.8% of Canadian employees are covered by a pension plan and that millions of Canadians simply can't save enough to retire. Provincial finance ministers want to improve the CPP, but they need federal legislation to enable them to do so. So far, Mr. Flaherty has refused. Increasing CPP benefits would improve the retirement incomes of the vast majority of Canadians. The concerned citizens are asking Mr. Flaherty to commit to introducing legislation providing improvements to the CPP.
