Media Advisory: Congress of Union Retirees of Canada to Focus on Pensions-NDP Leader Jack Layton Will Speak at Banquet

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 5, 2009) - The Congress of Union Retirees of Canada (CURC) will meet on October 6-8 to examine issues affecting seniors and the major issue will be pensions.

The conference will feature an expert panel on pensions. Presenters include: Bob Baldwin, who was a member of the Advisory Panel of the Ontario Expert Commission on Pensions; Cara MacDonald, who advises the Canadian Auto Workers on pensions; Joel Harden, a Canadian Labour Congress expert on pensions; and Danny Mallett, who is coordinating the CLC's campaign on pension reform. Retirees from GM, Chrysler, Ford, Nortel and other private sector companies, as well as former public sector employees will discuss what has happened to their pension plans and how to improve the security of pensions for themselves and future generations.

Delegates will debate a major paper on pensions that includes a plan for action. They will also discuss resolutions in areas such as health, trade and the Harmonized Sales Tax. NDP leader Jack Layton will speak to the delegates at a banquet on Wednesday evening.
